5 Genius Playroom Organization Tips for a Clutter-Free Space

Our clients often ask us to help them organize their playrooms and cut the clutter of broken, plastic toys. With a few simple strategies, you can transform chaos into calm, making playtime more enjoyable for both kids and parents. Here are five playroom organization tips to help you achieve just that:

1. Tame the Mess with Bins

Bins are your best friends when it comes to playroom organization. We like solid bins to achieve a cleaner overall look on shelves. We also prefer solid bins because they keep all those tiny toy pieces in! A few  of our favorite sources for bins are:

Another benefit of bins is that they keep visual clutter and overwhelm at bay by hiding away toys and other items when not in use.

An exception to solid bins is when you have a lego aficionado at home, we love these wall mounted acrylic bins to keep legos organized - they look really cool too! Here’s an option we’ve used from Amazon that gets the job done at a great price point.

2. Take Advantage of a Good Shelving System

You’ll need somewhere to store all those bins! We like to style playroom shelves with a mix of bins and fun decorative objects or toys. Here are some of the shelving systems we use in our playrooms.

West Elm Kids has a great storage option that’s modular, you can create lots of different storage configurations and even work stations/ desks. Check out the one we love here.

Here’s another great option in a beautiful wood finish from Crate & Kids. This one is also modular and includes an option for a desk. It’s a lovely, warm wood that feels modern and organic. We also love that this line ages really well as your kids grow up. This would work just as well in a toddler’s space as it would in a high schooler’s room. Check it out here!

3. Add Labels for Easy Cleanup

Make tidying up a breeze by labeling bins and containers. Not only does this help kids learn where things belong, but it also encourages them to clean up after themselves. Use colorful labels or chalkboard labels for a fun and functional touch.

You can find blank labels from organizing gurus, the Neat Method here. And here are a few bin label holders. We like these and here’s another option that looks like a chalkboard.

Etsy also has a great set of wooden labels we recommend to our clients if using plastic storage bins. These work well on the Ikea Trofast storage solution (pictured).

4. Use Your Walls for Storage

Maximize vertical space in your playroom by utilizing walls for storage. Install pegboards to hang craft supplies like scissors, markers, and tape. We love including a paper roll for endless drawing and creativity!

Pegboards aren’t just for craft areas, we used them in a home teen gym too to keep all the things organized and off the floor. When items have a designated place, kids are more likely to put them back - win, win!

Finally, slat walls are perfect for organizing Nerf blasters and darts, keeping them easily accessible yet out of the way.

5. Take Advantage of Display Shelves

Encourage a love for reading by displaying books on shelves with outward-facing covers. This not only makes it easier for kids to see and choose books but also adds visual interest to the room. Create a cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair or bean bags where kids can curl up with their favorite stories. The forward-facing bookshelves pictured here are acrylic and you can find them on Amazon. If you want to make a bolder statement, this is a very fun & colorful option.
